ABSTRACT

The commonest causes of mandibular fractures are road traffic accidents and interpersonal trauma; consequently, patients show a male predominance (3).

The condylar area is most frequently involved (29%); other commonly involved areas include the angle, the symphysis and the body of the mandible. Exact figures differ between sources, due in part to the different populations. The distribution of fractures is partly explained by pre-existing areas of weakness of the mandible (see Table 1).
