ABSTRACT

The dangers of ultraviolet light in terms of carcinogenesis are well known. It is also responsible for ‘general’ sun damage to skin, causing premature ‘aging’ such as wrinkling and pigmentation.

Increased sun exposure has followed the move to hotter climates for holiday destinations or for permanent relocation, and consequently there is an increased cancer risk for fair-skinned Caucasians living in sunny places such as South Africa or Australia. It is estimated that one in two Australians will have non-melanoma skin cancer in their lifetime. Public education is important; a tan is not healthy-it represents damage.
