ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses, against the background of their under-representation, the experiences of women civil engineers from entering higher education through to leaving education and then analyses the employment opportunities and challenges they face in the construction industry. Much of the discussion in this chapter is centred on women in western countries. On the basis of an analysis of equality of opportunity, it then draws some conclusions about why something should be done about women’s minority status, who should do it, and what should be done.
