ABSTRACT

Progress made in the understanding and treatment of cervical cancer has made the dream of eradicating this disease a potential reality. Advances in research have led to the development of effective screening programs, treatment options, and a vaccine that may eliminate the suffering and death due to this cancer for future generations. The USA has seen mortality rates decline nearly 80% in just the last 50 years, with an estimated 11150 new cases of invasive cervical cancer and 3670 cancer-related deaths expected in 2007.1 These numbers reflect the 4% annual reduction in the overall death rate as the majority of cases continue to be diagnosed in the early stages of disease.2
