ABSTRACT

The indications for pacemaker therapy have increased over recent years and now include both the treatment of bradyarrhythmias and heart failure. The American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the American Heart Association (AHA) have published guidelines for permanent pacemaker implantation,1 with recommendations presented in the standard ACC/AHA format (Table 6.1). These guidelines discuss indications for pacing in patients with sinus node dysfunction, acquired atrioventricular block, chronic bifascicular and trifascicular block, hypersensitive carotid sinus, and neurally mediated syndromes. They serve to direct the treating physician in selecting which patients would benefit from device therapy.
