ABSTRACT

Aspirin Aspirin as a primary prevention strategy in diabetes mellitus The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends that a dosage of 75-162 mg of enteric-coated aspirin be used as a preventive strategy in high-risk diabetic individuals. Individuals are defined as being at high risk for cardiovascular events on the basis of the following risk factors: 11 a family history of CAD; cigarette smoking; hypertension; weight >120% of ideal body weight; microalbuminuria or macroalbuminuria; total cholesterol >200 mg/dl (low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol >100; high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol <55 mg/dl in women and <45 mg/dl in men; and triglycerides >200 mg/dl). The American Heart Association (AHA) has issued similar guidelines, 12 and recommends 75-160 mg/day of aspirin as a primary prevention strategy in high-risk individuals, defined as those with a 10-year risk of CAD greater than 10%.
