ABSTRACT
This chapter consists of a brief comparison, with illustrations, of the wide variety of cellular interactions in mammals between maternal uterine epithelium and fetal trophoblast, from the initial contact to the formation of the definitive cellular placental structure between maternal and fetal circulations. This structure differs widely between species but is very constant within a species.
