ABSTRACT

Benzodiazepines (BZDs) are the main drugs used for the management of anxiety.1 Historically, the first BZD (chlordiazepoxide) was developed in 1959 and the second, diazepam, in 1963, both at Roche Laboratories. Over the next 30 years, BZDs, owing to their safety and tolerability profile, replaced the older antianxiety and hypnotic drugs (barbiturates, meprobamate, etc.).1
