ABSTRACT

Advancing the vision of safer and more inclusive cities for women and men, identifying tools and strategies to help move that vision closer to a reality, and further specifying what it means to experience a right to the city – these are the motivators for the work discussed in the preceding pages. While much remains to be done, it is also important to celebrate the considerable achievements of those who have persisted, despite considerable and some- times growing odds. They have contributed significantly to the idea (and occasionally the reality) that places should support all residents’ struggles to meet their daily needs, but also advance their dreams of recognition, representation and encounter – in other words, a right to the city. The goal of this final chapter is to provide an overview of the achievements to date that are highlighted in this volume, as well as the lessons learned, but, equally, to discuss the work that remains to be done and the voices that are not yet sufficiently audible. Finally, we also signal challenges and oppor- tunities that lie ahead and suggest where more attention is required to advance the building of more inclusive cities worldwide.
