Perhaps no other conflict in the world has attracted as much interest, generated as much controversy, and stirred such intense passions as the long-running conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. This conflict, now more than a century old, has defied repeated diplomatic efforts to resolve it, and it has contributed to wars and instability in the Middle East and violence around the world. It has helped give rise to political radicalism and religious extremism and has motivated countless acts of terrorism. As such, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has a direct and powerful impact upon regional security and global security.1
