ABSTRACT

All paths in life are the same and they do not arrive at any place. This is one of the main teachings Carlos Castaneda (1968, 1971, 1972) received from his Master, Don Juan, the Yaqui curandero (indigenous healer). Don Juan said, however, that some paths make you curse life at each step. If so, you have all the right to abandon them no matter what anyone says. Other paths, when you walk them, fill you with joy, peace and a sense of well-being. You are one with the path … they are paths with heart. Don Juan (Castaneda, 1968, pp. 105–106) advises his disciple: “Look at every path closely and deliberately. Try it as many times as you think necessary. Then ask yourself, and yourself alone, one question.… Does this path have a heart? If it does, the path is good; if it doesn't, it is of no use.”
