Urban regeneration and sustainable community development in historic neighborhoods of Istanbul
The growing literature on the new sustainability-oriented urban regeneration has strongly recommended the development of sustainable cities and communities to tackle multi-dimensional urban problems. This chapter aims to address the question of how to develop sustainable communities in historic areas of Turkish cities that accommodate poverty stricken neighborhoods; with a focus on Istanbul. After explaining the relationship between sustainability, urban regeneration and community needs, it examines the success and effectiveness, challenges and conflicts of an EU funded regeneration scheme developed for a deprived historic quarter of Istanbul. It highlights the major principles for future initiatives to achieve successful regeneration in neighborhoods beyond the confines of the case study example.
