Whose urban regeneration? Two Belfast case studies

ByJenny Muir

Urban regeneration in a divided society such as Northern Ireland cannot avoid the question: ‘who benefits?’ A common answer is ‘the local community’, whether indirectly through the economic gains of project based regeneration, or as a result of the more direct physical and social improvements of community-centred regeneration. Using two case studies from Belfast, this chapter shows that community gains are difficult to achieve in areas where urban space is contested and history matters.
