ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes a Green Growth 2050 Roadmap Model as a framework to guide tourism destinations into the emerging green economy. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) defines the green economy as ‘one that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and scarcities’ (UNEP 2011: 16). The three basic building blocks of a green economy transition are identified as low-carbon development, resource efficiency and social inclusion. UNEP further emphasises the need for, and feasibility of, a holistic green economy approach.
