ABSTRACT

There has been a rapid growth of knowledge-intensive services (KIS) since 1980 within the context of German economic globalization. These services contribute to the informal ‘knowledge transfer structure’, making them an important element in the national innovation system. The contribution of KIS to innovation arises from the interactions between suppliers and their clients and the learning processes associated with these interactions. Such processes are strongly influenced by institutional contexts. This chapter examines KIS development trends within the particular institutional framework of Germany and the contribution of such services to the German innovation system.
