ABSTRACT

This chapter summarises and compares the findings from the different company case studies from the various sectors and countries covered in this book. At the first look sector-specific strategies and responses prevail; however, a closer analysis shows that there are also similarities among such different cases as a privatised electricity company and a public hospital struggling with funding pressures. The chapter starts with an overview of major company reactions found in the four sectors and six countries under investigation. The next section then describes the impact on employment, followed by a summary of major changes in work organisation and working conditions. The next section analyses the transformation of industrial relations observed in the case study companies, followed by a discussion on the impact on productivity and service quality. The chapter ends with a brief summary.
