ABSTRACT

Part II of this book examines the question of sustainable retrofitting at the building level and looks at the application of bioclimatic retrofitting to assist in addressing climate change. Renovation in this context is seen as replacing existing systems on a like-for-like basis (accounting for performance improvements that might be gained through model upgrades, improved manufacturing techniques and the like) while systems retrofitting normally involves replacement of these systems with new or alternative equipment or technology to meet higher performance expectations or standards. A series of questions arise over the selection of these strategies and solution sets which the following chapters seek to address.
