ABSTRACT

The retrofitting process is increasingly using some form of Building Environmental Assessment (BEA) system. It has become a new pathway for green design using building performance as a basis for decision-making (Hyde et al., 2007). However, it is now recognised that this approach has yet to be fully developed for retrofitting. Research has begun to fully examine the connection between BEA and retrofitting. As seen in Chapter 3.3, the challenge of developing a common approach to retrofitting is how to encompass a wide range of building types which are in varying stages of building obsolescence. The challenge for building environmental assessment is to span this wide range, all with very specific preconditions. Our current thinking is that this is not possible as the typology is so broad that it defies classification, hence a process which is more project-specific is needed.
