ABSTRACT

When the term ‘renovation’ is applied to an existing building, it implies a fundamental assumption that the building is worthy of existence and that the main task – by definition – is to ‘restore’ it to a good condition. In sustainability terms, building renovation mean transforming an existing building into one that is capable of existing much longer in a healthy condition which brings to its occupants the necessary comfort they demand, to its owner a peace of mind regarding profitability and marketability in the highly competitive environment, and to the planet a set of criteria (conditions) which translates into wiser and more efficient use of various resources.
