chapter  10
Educational Leaders and the Capabilities Approach
ByAmy L-M. Toson and Elise Frattura
Pages 16

Educational leaders for equity and social justice are often better understood through a human development and capabilities approach. Embedded in a capabilities approach is the manner in which educational leaders view their students, parents, teachers, and the other stakeholders that becomes central to “how” they lead on behalf of all learners, especially those with disabilities. While such school leaders may wrestle with the potential social and political fallout from constituents steeped in a dominant human capital agenda, they move forward on behalf of educational social justice and human dignity and respect for all learners, especially those identifi ed as having a disability.
