ABSTRACT

In the archives of the museum at Lambinowice exists a photograph, taken in 1943, of an exhibition held inside a camp barrack of Allied POWs in German captivity at Stalag VIII B/344 Lamsdorf (Lambinowice). In the centre of the barrack, on tables pushed together, there are various objects, meticulously handcrafted by POWs. This impressive exhibition was the culmination of long preparations by the POWs. Among the exhibits were chess pieces carved with great precision from toothbrush handles, a working model of a steam engine made of metal tins, oil and watercolour paintings and many other objects. 1
