ABSTRACT
Starting in the 1980s there was a marked rise in the number of museums and a significant growth in cultural tourism throughout Europe (Ginsburgh and Mairesse 1997; Prentice 2001). These trends have stimulated profound changes in cultural tourism which have also affected Italy, perhaps more than many other countries.
