ABSTRACT

Discourses of resilience and uncertainty are associated with a number of concepts such as vulnerability, recovery, mitigation, adaptation, risk perceptions, resiliency planning and uncertainty management. The chapter addresses these in the context of tourism and the environment, commencing with a look at one of the major uncertainties facing tourism, climate change, and then goes on to address other dimensions. This is followed by a brief look at some institutional efforts to increase resiliency through sustainable (tourism) development and related initiatives. A short case example addressing the issue of collaborative governance and behaviour change is discussed in the latter part of the chapter.
