Bowen Theory as a Guide to Defi ning a Self Over a Life Cycle


The Bowen approach to psychotherapy and its concommitant theory were introduced at a personally vulnerable time in the author’s individual and family life cycle, but it has had tremendous impact ever since, currently spanning 40 years of his 73-year life. Its infl uence shifted the author’s view of development from a facile individual emergence to a complex and interdependent process that is subject to numerous predictable and unforeseen events.
