ABSTRACT

Design diagrams can be embodied into material and architectural prototypes; in such a condition architecture performs as an analogue computer, reading contextual forces, loading programmatic and material constraints and feeding back spatial, ornamental and behavioural solutions. The actualization of the self-organizing city manifests itself as a progressive acquisition of material and performative specificities in relation to a specific contextualization process. A diverse pool of actors, agents, forces and protocols cooperate to form and reform the urban space. A digital space, a sort of Facebook for ecological urbanism, connects into an ever-evolving network of public and private spaces of interaction; this network is constantly adjusting thanks to both the Milanese and the global citizens of Milan. Urban rhythms are therefore reflected in the urban interface and become protagonists of a new conception of urban design that features ecological processes and their spatio-temporal articulation.
