ABSTRACT

A focal point in the literature on religious education is the role that the state plays vis-à-vis religious education (Callan 1997; De Jong and Snik 2002; De Ruyter andMiedema 2000; Dwyer 1998; Feinberg 2006; Fuess 2007; Gardner et al. 2002; Jackson 2004; Jackson et al. 2007; Spinner- Halev 2000; Thobani 2010). Specifically, this literature is concerned with the different ways in which states accommodate religion within their edu-cational systems.
