Competition: Playing to Win?
Is there a Place for Competition in Education? Competition has played a huge role in our short time on the planet – and is core to our modern understanding of evolution for all plant and animal life. Coming from a basic need to survive and prosper in new or increasingly crowded spaces, competition over time has repeatedly seen one species overtake or outlast another. Th is is usually linked with ‘winning’ the competition to adapt fi rst and best to new environmental conditions (human species who emerged from Africa and adapted best to the cold climes and scavenger-type diet needed in northern parts of Europe, for example, were the ones who went on to prosper and eventually become the only human species on the planet).
