ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the many years of research into the uses of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) for teaching and learning, telling the story of how technologies have changed and how, along with the focus of research, these have affected our teaching. It explores what kinds of learner challenges and interactions are promoted and enabled by specific styles of educational software environments. The chapter discusses the range of research lessons about what kinds of practices by teachers have been successful and how teacher-training strategies have or have not been effective. It presents evidence from more than 40 years of research into the impact of ICT in secondary schools on teaching and learning. A large number of research studies into attitudinal and personality factors towards technology in education have shown that a fear of computers, liking of ICT, have strong links between students' and teachers' attitudes and the effects on ICT use and learning.
