ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates that how new technologies can be used to enable learning and develop inclusive practices and argues the case for a social rather than medical model through which to view learning needs. It deals with a discussion surrounding key terminology and proceeds by examining how technology supports the particular needs of pupils with special needs and disabilities. The chapter discusses how the use of technology can support the individual needs of pupils with special educational needs and disability and promote the social model of disability by creating enabling environments. Enabling environments can be created by addressing attitudes, clearly identifying the needs of the individual pupils, and using appropriate tools to meet their needs. The multifaceted relationship must be fully acknowledged in order to meet the needs of pupils and effectively integrate technology into the curriculum. Mobile technology is becoming less expensive and the ability to adapt personal mobile devices to suit the needs of individuals is expanding.
