ABSTRACT

China has a vast territory with a long coastline. For a rapidly developing country with the largest population in the world, per capita resource availability is low. This reality is coupled with already vulnerable ecosystems, as a result of which the country will surely face more severe challenges because of climate change. Furthermore, given that China is at a crucial stage of implementing its “moderate prosperity” program, increasing climate risks must be viewed within the context of accelerating urbanization, industrialization, and residential energy consumption. In this context, reducing development costs, preventing potential loss, and improving the ecological environment are potential big challenges for China in terms of improving its capacity to adapt to climate change.
