ABSTRACT
One of the most engaging doors to the study of the Talmud is the tractate Pirke Avot—the Lessons of the Fathers. It is in Hebrew rather than Aramaic; it is aphoristic rather than exegetic; its normative appeal is to Ethics rather than to Law. Like beauty, its banality or profundity is in the eyes of the beholder.
