ABSTRACT
Change is fundamental to the natural development of coastal systems. The timescales over which this occurs depends on two main features:
The resilience and hence inherent stability of the coast (its physical condition)
The forces acting upon it, which range from storms, where change can occur over minutes to daily cycles of tidal inundation, longer-term processes of weathering, climate change and vegetation development
