ABSTRACT

This chapter describes techniques for determining management training needs, which use a combination of interview methods and data about individuals gathered through psychometric tests. Two different applications are discussed. An “organisation development” (OD) treatment, where an overall psychological profile of managers was sought, and a survey method used to discover managerial competencies, as a first step in a management development programme. Both applications address questions about management qualities. In the former case, the broad characteristics possessed by a company's managers, in the latter instance, the qualities demanded of managers at different levels in a large public sector organisation.
