ABSTRACT

Susie Orbach starts by outlining what she sees as the core problem in the mother-daughter relationship: that of the unconscious identifications which make it difficult for both mother and daughter to separate, that is, to know the difference between their own feelings and each other’s and therefore to be able to experience clearly who they are. This has been and remains an important theme in Susie’s work, and in her joint work with Luise Eichenbaum.
