ABSTRACT

Maternal ambivalence is curiously hard to believe in. Even while writing a book on the subject I often found myself doubting its very existence (Parker 1995). Was it simply an apocryphal excuse for mothers who hate their children? Was I offering empty reassurance by arguing for the hidden contribution to creative mothering that ambivalence can provide?
