ABSTRACT

Some key issues have emerged: the apparently relentless juggernaut of professionalisation has costs as well as benefits; oppression comes in many forms; the needs of trainers are as crucial as those of trainees; the quality of relationships is as central in counselling training as it is in counselling. The developmental stage of trainees and trainers matters a great deal, as do past and present life-experiences, while the integration of continuing professional development and supervision is essential to provide the most effective balance of support and challenge. Supervision, indeed, about which we have been able to say little here, is a vital forum for the exploration of all the puzzles and paradoxes of both counselling and counselling training.
