The 1906 earthquake and fi re of San Francisco has been extensively researched and written about.1 So why add yet another article? It seems that the insurance sector-slightly detached from everyday experience-might contribute a di erent angle to a well-known subject. Also, the insurance sector’s role is a yet under-researched area in the history of the earthquake and fi re, both in the fi eld of economic as well as environmental history.2
