ABSTRACT
Christianity in its primitive phase of development was a movement, or a collection of movements, within Judaism. That was both its perception of itself and the way it was generally seen by outsiders. The claim of the first followers of Jesus was that they were the true Israel, and they took for granted the normative status of the Scriptures of Israel.1 In Chapter 2, we saw how the Epistle to the Hebrews reads the Scriptures of Israel as the foreshadowed truth of what Jesus, the great high priest, fully reveals. What came before Jesus were types of the truth, while Jesus himself is the substance of truth.
