ABSTRACT

Anthropologists and natives – usually different people, in a complicated encounter. But anthropologists are also natives somewhere. I have never held a research grant, or been on research leave, to carry out local studies in Stockholm. But as I move about the city where I have lived for the greater part of my life, I can be an observer-participant, and always available as my own informant. And I can use it, too, as a place to think with, in relation to wider processes.
