ABSTRACT
Despite a popular rhetoric about the importance of family life, it is clear that paid work roles are given higher social priority. Some time ago, Pleck identified the ‘work family role system’ in which there are strains and conflicts between male paid work roles and female family roles (1977). Clearly, paid work roles such as work scheduling, shift work patterns and commuting all influence families.
