ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the involvement of the UK national governing bodies of sport (NGB) with the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games. This is an underexplored topic, which has been further relegated to a back-seat position as the main focus of most policy, economic and sport analysis has been on the effectiveness of the public investments and the legacies of the Games. Despite increased government and academic interest in the potential of mega events to contribute to the political, social and economic agenda, very little is known about the role of mega events in enhancing NGBs’ capacity and operational effectiveness.
