ABSTRACT

We don’t trust ourselves and our pupils to develop working relationships whereby [pupils] can assume real responsibility within the system. Teacher dependence, if not necessarily overt, is still a covert factor. I would hope that no teacher would deliberately set out to keep their charges in thrall to them. The problem lies with the trailing encumbrances attached to the role of student [pupil] when linked with the word teacher. . . . It establishes a mind set.
