ABSTRACT

Industrial design is concerned with the vast array of goods manufactured by serial- or mass-production methods. The profession of industrial designer emerged in the twentieth century and can be seen as a feature of the division of labour and specialization characteristic of large-scale modern industry. Before this specialism developed the function of design in industry was less well-defined and was performed by a variety of people, from major artists to anonymous workers. These more obscure and distant circumstances present particular problems and challenges.
