ABSTRACT

Over recent years my colleagues and I have been introducing technology activities into our theme work, in order to ensure that all the children have experience in designing and making. Although we have mixed ability classes, which include statemented children with learning difficulties, we do not differentiate the technology tasks we set. Instead they are designed by the staff so that the children can approach them in an ‘open-ended’ way, at their own level of competence, using and developing the skills they possess and ultimately completing the work within their different levels of attainment. This approach is advocated by Newton and Newton (1991: 66) and Johnsey (1990: 8).
