ABSTRACT

There is quite a high degree of confidence about design and technology among members of staff in the school, and there have been several INSET training sessions on the subject. A senior member of staff has taken responsibility for equipping each classroom with a toolboard and materials needed for individual class projects. The school has a large craft room with workbenches, pillar drill and bandsaw, and this is regularly used by individual classes as the need arises and the timetable allows. It is also used for claywork as part of the lower school craft afternoon once a week. This craft cycle comprises textiles, food, technology and art and design. Other technology work in the school tends to be cross-curricular, and the lower school classes also do extra projects as is deemed appropriate by individual teachers. As a Year 5 teacher responsible for technology in the craft cycle, I have tried as far as possible to link the projects with Year 4 and Year 5 science work on forces and energy, levers and pulleys.
