ABSTRACT

There are many schools of thought on the methods employed to facilitate children’s learning. In my classroom I had always used a ‘chalk and talk’ and ‘demonstration’ teaching style, which I considered to be traditional, and which was the method by which I had been taught. I had not even seen the possibility of teaching in ways which allowed pupils to apply their new knowledge, or to explore ideas, as suggested by Jeffrey, who says:

Teaching facts is one thing, teaching pupils in such a way that they can apply the facts is another; but providing learning opportunities which encourage pupils to use information naturally when handling uncertainty, in a manner which results in capability is a challenge of a different kind.
