Working with the young child who has special needs in the hospital setting

ByPAMELA BARNES

One aspect of working with the child who has special needs, and one that is often overlooked, is in the hospital or health-care setting. Children with special needs and disability are more frequently admitted to hospital. This may be for treatment, surgery or simple observation. Now that play is recognized as an essential aspect of a child’s treatment in hospital, it becomes important to offer appropriate opportunities for a child with special needs/disability to use play within healthcare settings. This will require a level of expertise and special skills on behalf of the Hospital Play Specialist. The Hospital Play Specialist is now a fully recognized member of the multidisciplinary team and is trained to offer experiences of play for all children treated in health care settings.
