The impacts of a world in transformation on the prospects for maritime transport

We live at a time of turmoil in world affairs. The international community is facing an array of immediate and emerging crises: not only the threats of instability in the world fi nancial and economic systems accompanied by rising levels of unemployment and public debt, but also the growing risk of the destabilization of the climate, the accelerating destruction of nature and tightening energy and resource constraints. And these challenges, which are essentially interconnected, must be managed in the wider context of rising inequality, poverty and exclusion within a growing world population.
