Mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from shipping: Potential, cost and strategies
International shipping is one of the world’s key heavy industrial sectors. It has facilitated the onset of the global economy and remains a key motor behind trade and development in the world. As with other signifi cant energy-consuming sectors, the maritime sector faces signifi cant challenges to ensure that its con - tribution to the world is not unduly eroded by the environmental impacts engendered by its activity. These impacts are related to oil pollution, invasive species spread through ballast water, and air pollution due to emissions of nitrogen oxides, sulphur and black carbon. This chapter, however, will focus on the sector’s not inconsequential emissions of carbon dioxide CO 2 and other greenhouse gases, and will investigate the scope for these to be reduced costeffectively.
