Investigation of potential climate change impacts on ports and maritime operations around the southern African coast

Climate change is expected to have a signifi cant impact on port and maritime operations on a global scale (IPCC, 2007; UNCTAD, 2009). Possible detrimental impacts and effects include: increased intensity or occurrence of cyclones, more severe wind and wave climate, stronger ocean currents (potentially also resulting in increased ‘freak’ waves), increased long-wave action, breaching of natural protective features, overtopping of existing protective structures, increased coastal erosion and under-scouring, increased structural and operational port maintenance requirements, and others.
